Blackgang SunsetThis striking sunset view from the top of Blackgang Cliffs captures most of the 'Back of the Wight'. Looking out across the English Channel, this rugged coastline, popular with walkers and fossil hunters and bird watchers has some of England's most spectacular natural beaches. Historically known for being a haunt of smugglers, Blackgang is at the Western end of the 'The Undercliff', an area of outstanding natural beauty skirting 12km of the south coast of the island back to Luccombe. The cliffs are a sanctuary for nesting sea birds and peregrine falcons.

Bembridge Lifeboat StationThe first lifeboat service began here at Bembridge, Isle of Wight in 1867. The 32 foot self-righting lifeboat 'City of Worcester' was propelled by 10 oars double-banked and also had a heavy storm lug sail. 1922 saw the introduction of a powered Lifeboat and alterations to the station. A250 yard concrete pier from the shore to the outer rock ledge was built and the Bembridge station could be regarded as up to date and fully efficient. The range of the new boat was so improved that Brook and Brighstone stations were considered redundant and they were closed. In 1939, shortly before the outbreak of war, the RNLI decided to place the larger and more powerful 40 horsepower 'Jesse Lumb' at Bembridge. The all-weather lifeboat house constructed in 1922 survived until 2009 when it was demolished. The last Lifeboat to use the old boathouse was the Tyne Class Lifeboat 'Sir Max Aiken III'. This is the new station and gangway, completed in October 2010 for state of the art Tamar Class lifeboat 'Alfred Albert Williams' with its massive 2000 horsepower. The station, shop and cafe are open daily.
